Boating Education and Training

Objective

We will endeavor to provide convenient, timely, and affordable access to the knowledge, information, education, training, assistance, and support required to help recreational boaters be knowledgeable, informed, responsible, and safe boaters:

  • minimize or prevent boating related incidents, accidents, injuries, or mishaps

  • develop and maintain skills needed to operate watercraft in a safe, responsible, confident, and reliable manner

  • help prepare boaters on proper procedures to follow if a watercraft related emergency does occur

  • help protect and preserve our waterways and the environment for future generations to enjoy


Maryland Regulations

Operators of motorized watercraft born on or after July 1, 1972 must carry a State approved boating safety education certificate whenever operating a motorized vessel.  If certificate is not available to show Maryland Department of Natural Resource (DNR) or U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Officers during a boarding or vessel check, a minimum fine of $25 for first offense and up to $500 for each additional offense can be imposed.

Lifejackets worn by children less than 4 years of age or under 50 pounds must include these additional safety features:

1) a strap that can be secured between the legs

2) an inflatable headrest or high collar

3) a web grab handle
