Flotilla History / Mission / Invitation |

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla-16 is based in historic Annapolis, Maryland (founded in 1649), the state capital and home of the US Naval Academy. The existence of this flotilla dates back to at least 1939 when the Coast Guard Auxiliary was known as the Coast Guard Reserve. During World War II, Flotilla-16 had thirteen members who conducted patrols, extinguished jetty and wharf aids to navigation (ATON) lights during air raids or blackouts, and supported other US Coast Guard missions as requested. Although the Flotilla had thirteen boats ready and willing to serve, due to gasoline rationing for the most part a maximum of two vessels were deployed at a time. Today, the Flotilla has over 40 members who proudly continue the long standing tradition of freely volunteering their time, talents, vessels, and radio facilities to aid the US Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) help educate, protect, and serve the boating public, keep our waterways safe and secure, and protect and preserve our environment and maritime resources for all to enjoy. In our assigned Area Of Responsibility (AOR) on the Chesapeake Bay and adjoining rivers, members typically conduct over 50 safety, regatta, and special event (Blue Angles, Bay Swim, Tug of War, etc.) patrols each boating season, stand weekly radio watches at the local Coast Guard Station throughout the year, regularly teach boating courses, perform vessel safety checks, assist the community with marine events, directly support Coast Guard Station Annapolis and Sector Baltimore with critical projects and missions, and have adopted Annapolis Harbor as well as Magothy and Severn Rivers as part of NOAA’s Chart Update Program. We believe working relationships built on personal friendships are key to successfully carrying out missions as part of "Team Coast Guard." Thus, fellowship activities such as enjoying an evening cruise, an annual potluck barbeque and picnic and our Change of Watch dinner in December to install new officers and celebrate the contributions of members throughout the year are an important part of our activities.
Respectfully Yours, Walt Discenza U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary |
